On Wednesday night at 3 a.m., Alain and I rushed to the Alta Vista Animal Emergency Hospital. We feared the worst when they told us our little girl had to stay the night.
Over the next two days, both Alain and I went through an emotional rollercoaster when the veterinarians couldn’t find the problem.
Finally, on Thursday night we sat down with the veterinarian and he gave use the news. Our little Betsy suffers from portosystemic shunt.
What is a portosystemic shunt
This disease occurs when a pet’s venous blood from the intestine bypasses the liver. The pet can be born with the shunt, which is what happened in Betsy’s case, or can get it later. about three-quarters of the cases are congenital – acquired at birth.
Signs of the disease include weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, disorientation, pacing, temporary blindness, etc. Betsy showed all these symptoms on the night we rushed her to the hospital.
The Treatment
A whole lot of medications later, and Betsy is slowly starting to act herself. the medication is meant to treat the symptoms, because, unfortunately, in Betsy’s case, there is no cure.
It has been a rough couple of days for Betsy, Alain and I, but one thing is for sure, we are happy she is safe and sound at home with the people who love her.
