Young PR Pros: Episode #5 – Blogging for the young pro

This week Kristine Simpson is joined by two wonderful guest hosts, Julia Kent and Molli Megasko. They start off by discussing a unique internship program at Maverick PR and wishes Heather Leigh, an Algonquin College student, good luck in her endeavors to being the next Maverick PR Girl. The ladies touch on video resumes and how they would work for a young PR professional.

Next, they discuss a Forbes article talking about employers and their use of social media. In two words: be professional. The article states one in five employers is turning away potential employees because of their unprofessionalism on social media.

Then, Kristine catches up with David Gauthier, and eager young student ready to take the PR world by storm through blogging. The ladies talk about good tips to making a blog successful, everything from consistency in posting to editing your blog posts to ensure the utmost quality.

We want to hear about your advice for David and other young professionals looking to blogging to build their career. Share your opinions by writing a comment below, send us an email at youngprpros@gmail.com, or send us a message on Twitter @youngprpros or @kristinesimpson.

  1. Great episode once again! As someone who didn’t listen to podcasts before this one, I find myself looking forward to Tuesday’s when I can listen to the great conversations and advice given.

It’s interesting that you mentioned Maverick PR’s internship “contest”. I’ve noticed several different agencies are starting to use different, more social methods in their hiring process. Trampoline Branding in Nova Scotia is currently looking for their next intern in the “Big Intern Hunt”. It gives young people like myself the opportunity to show some of our skills before interviews. To even get an interview with Trampoline you need to show your “social power” and the people with the most likes/shares/comments are the ones to receive interviews. I’m glad you did a post on blogging. Hearing how others manage their blogs and schedule their blog posts has given me the push I need to really get back to blogging. Dave made great points. This industry is competitive and having people recognize your name, or see your skills in a blog is a great tool.

Looking forward to next weeks post,
    Sarah

  2. Thanks Sarah again for being such a devoted fan. We love your comments.

I too think the new social recruitment is interesting. It is a unique way of showing off your talents before you are hired. But, I don’t think we really need those special social recruitment initiatives to show off our talents before we are hired. There is nothing stopping young PR pros from making a video about themselves and sharing it with potential employers. Be creative and stand out.

    Thanks again for listening!
