Write for an audience

“All speech, written or spoken, is a dead language, until it finds a willing and prepared hearer.”
— Robert Louis Stevenson

Just another reminder of how important it is to write “for” an audience and not “to” an audience.

When writing, try to always answer the following questions:

  1. Who do you want to receive the key messages? And the answer can’t be “everyone”, “anyone”, “anyone who cares”.
  2. Why should your audience care? And the answer can’t be “because the idea is cool”, “because they should”.
  3. How will your audience receive the key messages? Is it online? The radio? Newspaper? Each outlet has a different writing style.

What are your tricks to writing for an audience?
