The news on the street right now is that Facebook is thinking of intergrating the hashtag in their social networking platform.
Depending on how it works and how it is implemented in the social network, I already see great potential.
Currently I use hashtags for two reasons:
- To follow an event when I am live tweeting. For example, when I am at a Third Tuesday Ottawa event, I follow #3TYOW to learn how others are interpreting the lessons from the speaker.
- To monitor key topics that interest me. For example, I follow the hashtag #Jobline to find good articles for Young PR Pros, #Orleans to get the news from my neighborhood, etc.
I would love to be able to search and monitor for key topics on Facebook, but because of Facebook’s private nature, all monitoring tools available out there have a hard time indexing Facebook.
But imagine a way you can search within your own private network for the key topics and issues that interest you. I foresee this increasing conversation within your own network.
I for one am very excited for the hashtag to hit Facebook shelves and I cannot wait to try it out!
